Katie Taylor’s defeat at the Olympics broke everyone’s heart but she’ll always be a legend

Conan Doherty

Katie Taylor went down swinging. ‘Til the very last.

The Irish boxing legend was eliminated from the Women’s Light 57-60kg at the quarter-final stage and bowed out with all the respect and gratitude that a hero like her has earned.

Finland’s Mira Potkonen denied the Olympic champion a medal spot by ousting her on a split decision and the Wicklow native’s defeat sent shockwaves through the sport and through her proud country.

The five-time world champion went out of the Olympics but she went out with her held high. She went out with the admiration for her still in tact.

Gutted was the word.

It didn’t change anyone’s views on her.

Not everyone was convinced by the result.

Plenty were though, in fairness.

No-one enjoyed seeing her in tears.

And she’ll always be a hero.

She’s left a legacy no matter what.

Thank you, Katie. You’ll be back.
