James Power is a professional boxer from Cork who is also studying for the Leaving Cert.
Over the weekend, James Power became Ireland’s youngest professional boxer. The 17-year-old took the accolade previously held by Monaghan’s Aaron McKenna when he made his debut in the pro ranks in Tijuana, Mexico.
Power can’t actually obtain an Irish licence until he turns 18 next April. So that’s why he decided to start off his career south of the border as he was granted a licence by the Tijuana Boxing Commission.
In his first fight in the pro ranks, Power took on journeyman Omar Santos, who is listed on Boxrec with a record of 0-3. Power passed his first test with flying colours. He beat the local fighter from pillar to post before securing a second-round stoppage victory.

The young Cork fighter thanked his supporters on social media after the event.
“Absolutely delighted to get the Win against a Very Strong & Tough opponent tonight. Can’t thank you all enough for the support leading up to this, it is incredible to have so many supporters already.”
