The four-city Mayweather – McGregor World tour drew to a close on Friday night in London, and it’s fair to say that it didn’t disappoint.
Toronto was a highlight and London lived up to expectations too.
Brooklyn was a farce and Los Angelas wasn’t much better.
McGregor supporters were treated with the usual cockiness and bravado from their hero throughout, however, and the only thing many of these fans were missing was a date in Dublin.
The Irish abroad took over Toronto on Wednesday night to set up a carnival atmosphere for their boisterous Dubliner, and there was only one band of supporters to be heard in London as well.
Just imagine the atmosphere that would’ve been created had one of these press conferences been taken to our capital city.
Well, according to UFC chief Dana White, Dublin was a real possibility for one of these press conferences. The only reason the excitement didn’t make its way to Dublin was because of Floyd Mayweather’s fear of being subject to ‘hostile territory’ from the McGregor faithful.
In fairness, the buck mad Irish probably would’ve made it a living hell for the forty-year-old.
“We talked about going to Texas too, and, obviously Dublin made a lot of sense, but there was no way Floyd was going to go to Dublin.
“Oh, absolutely, (He said no) We’re in London, this is as close to Dublin as you’re going to get. We’re in London, and this is hostile territory for him right now. Imagine we’re in Dublin. That guy’s got to stay in a hotel somewhere and drive in a car. I wouldn’t go to Dublin either, personally, if I was in his position.
White revealed that he asked Mayweather’s adviser, Al Haymon, about the possibility of bringing the two fighters to Dublin, but there wasn’t even a point in asking him.
“I talked to Al Haymon about it, and he was like ‘Yeah, we’re not going to Dublin.’
Maybe Irish fans are just too good for their own good.
Never change lads.
