Floyd Mayweather’s lighter gloves offer wasn’t actually a bluff

The Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor circus has descended into a discussion over glove size.

When Floyd Mayweather made the offer to use 8 oz gloves for his August 26 bout against Conor McGregor, the world was sceptical. Hell, even McGregor’s response didn’t signify he had any faith in his adversary’s offer.

The main reason being that according to the rules, fighters over 135 lbs should wear ten-ounce gloves, but fighters between the 135-pound to the 147-pound range are able to wear 8 oz gloves upon agreement. The weight for ‘The Money Fight’ is set at 154 lbs, where the 8 oz gloves aren’t permitted.

However, the greatest defensive boxer ever told his hordes of Instagram followers to take what the media says with a grain of salt because ‘it’s not true unless it’s coming from me.’

There is a chance that the two warriors may duke it out wearing lighter gloves yet.

NAC executive director Bob Bennett has confirmed to MMA Fighting that Mayweather has inquired about the process of using 8 oz gloves for their diamond-encrusted panty night. While no petition has been submitted to the commission to make it happen, the window is still open.

Bennett revealed that Mayweather and McGregor would have to state their case in front of the commission at its next meeting on August 16 if they want the fight contested with 8 oz gloves. If they make a strong enough case, the commission could hand them a waiver.
