This could be bigger than the “Fight of the Century”.
It looks like Floyd Mayweather Jr’s retirement won’t be lasting long. The boxing great is considering a comeback bout against undefeated middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, according to trainer Abel Sanchez.
Sanchez explained to On The Ropes Boxing that Mayweather is eyeing up a bout against the 34-0 Kazakh since hanging up his gloves for good after beating Andre Berto in 2015.
“He is saying things about a comeback, he just seems to be fixated on Golovkin. I’ve seen three or four pieces in the last couple of weeks where he’s talking about beating Golovkin, it looks like he’s laying the ground work for something, whether it’s Golovkin or somebody else. Floyd’s laying the ground works for a comeback.”
The cornerman hinted that if there was enough interest in a Mayweather v Golovkin fight, then his fighter would likely try to make it happen.
“I think you lay the ground work, you say things to see how people react, you say things to see if it’s something that the public wants and he’s gauging that. We’ve always known that Floyd was a great businessman, so it’s all part of a plan for him. There’s nothing that he says or does that is not calculated.”
The one stumbling block to a prospective fight against Mayweather is the issue of weight. Golovkin fights at 159 lb, while Mayweather is a more trim 148 lb. However, Golovkin has stated in the past that he would be willing to meet half way and drop down to 154 to face the boxing great.
Golovkin’s next fight is against Dominic Wade on April 29, where he will be looking to defend his WBA, IBF, IBO and WBC interim middleweight titles.
