Dana White not happy with Showtime’s handling of Amhrán na bhFiann

Maybe Conor McGregor was onto something when he called Showtime’s Stephen Espinoza a ‘fucking weasel’.

The training camps are pretty much over, the gameplans have been set, all that’s left now for Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather is to make weight and oh, yes, actually fight.

With everything else that’s going on, you can be forgiven for forgetting these two warriors are actually going to wing leather inside the ring, but this is show business, baby. That gut-churningly disgusting ‘money belt’ will serve as a constant reminder of that fact.

Every good show needs a good musical act and the powers that be sourced a marquee name to perform the Star-Spangled Banner at the Money Fight. Demi Lovato will belt out the US national anthem in Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena in the wee hours of Sunday morning.

Aside from the fact that she used to date former UFC and Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold, we don’t know much about Ms. Lovato. However, we have heard of her, which is something… we guess.

Wait, wait… hold on a minute. If Showtime already sorted the singer of the US national anthem, who have they acquired to perform the Irish one?

As it turns out, Showtime didn’t get anyone. As Dana White told press in Las Vegas, he was told at the last minute that it was up to the MMA side of the promotion to book their musical act. (quotes via MMA Fighting)

“That’s a crazy story. Showtime basically popped it on us two days ago. ‘You guys have to…’ What do you mean we have to? This is your show. Ok, you want to play it like that? Alright.”

Luckily, they managed to get someone two days out from fight night, but White was reluctant to reveal who the star was until the announcement was made official. He did, however, reveal that U2 frontman Bono was the first person they called, but he was double-booked.

“I was trying to call Ireland at all the wrong times and did all the stuff. We called Bono first. He said he wanted to do it, but he’s got a wedding this weekend. You can’t call somebody like these guys with three days notice. We’re very lucky that we pulled this off. When we’re ready to announce it, we’ll let you know how it when down.”
