Carl Frampton’s reaction to Floyd Mayweather’s protege missing weight was absolutely gas

Fair play

Never underestimate Carl Frampton’s ability to poke fun at himself.

Former WBA super-featherweight king Carl Frampton is in Las Vegas for the money fight to trump all money fights.

‘The Jackal’ was in the city of sin when Gervonta Davis was stripped of his IBF title for failing to make weight ahead of his bout on the Mayweather v McGregor undercard. The 22-year-old was set to defend his belt against Costa Rica’s Francisco Fonseca, but he weighed in two pounds over the 130 lb limit.

Davis boasts a pristine professional record of 18-0 (17 KOs) and was expected to keep his belt with a victory. The fight will still take place, but it is only a title fight for one man. Fonseca can win the world championship because he made weight.

Davis apologised to all his fans who made the trip to Las Vegas to see him defend the belt, but he vowed to make it up to them.

Meanwhile, Frampton couldn’t resist chiming in with a zinger… about himself.

This comment was a reference to the fight he was scheduled to have against Andres Gutierrez in a WBC title eliminator in Belfast’s SSE Arena last month. After missing weight by 1lb, Frampton ruled himself out of the prize of a title fight against champion Garry Russel Jr.

The fight ended up getting called off entirely because of an accident Gutierrez suffered the night before the fight.
