“That’s wound me up.”
Chantelle Cameron has not forgiven Katie Taylor for some of her actions during their first fight earlier in the summer, and the unified champion is “wound up.”
Cameron defeated the Irish hero on her home soil in a blockbuster showdown, where the Northampton native’s come forward, all-action style, was enough to out-muscle Taylor and get the win.
Now the rematch is set for November 25th, back in the 3Arena, but the script has flipped because it’s now the home fighter who is the underdog, with Cameron the favourite to win once again.
‘Spiteful’ Chantelle Cameron tears into Katie Taylor for her “piss-take” during last fight
Speaking on the build up documentary by DAZN Make The Days Count, the 32-year-old revealed her particular annoyance at having to wait in the ring for what seemed like an age, while Taylor made a very slow and long ring-walk.
“I remember watching her and thinking ‘you haven’t even started walking yet’ – I think it was a piss-take. It’s a long enough night anyway, let’s get cracking now.”
Once the bell went, then the ‘cracking’ started, and Cameron came out all guns blazing, while the Bray native looked flat and slow to react. Some have suggested that the pressure of fighting at home, and the long ring-walk, played a part in her slow start, but the English woman was having none of it.
“I have felt Katie’s power, and I know she can’t hurt me. I take shots to give shots. There were people saying that Katie wasn’t the best because of the ring walk, because of this, because of that, it doesn’t matter.
“If I’m on my best night or she is on her worst night, I beat her at the end of the day.”
Chantelle Cameron “wound up” by rematch demands of Katie Taylor.
Usually when the away fighter wins, and a rematch clause is put in place, then the agenda is set by the winner, as they are the champion and hold all of the leverage.
However, given the stardom of Taylor, and the pull that’s he still has, even in defeat, the next fight is still taking place in Dublin and seemingly all on her terms, something which irks the undisputed queen of the light-welterweight division.
“I can see why Katie wants to fight me on her own terms, but that’s wound me up. I have to come back to Dublin again, give her a second run at a homecoming. I never had a homecoming – you’re not putting your belts on the line, this is my legacy, and I feel like I’m being held back a bit because Katie is getting another shot at me again.
“I have got to beat Katie again, to make sure I cement it, because what I did the first night, goes out the window if I lose. I will go in there with a bit of grip, a bit of beast, and then I’m completely different.
“I’m spiteful, I’m horrible, I’m just a completely different fighter, and that’s why on November 25th I know that a whole different version of me is about to be in that ring.”
Chantelle Cameron is sick of “excuses” made for Katie Taylor
Cameron clearly feels like she isn’t getting enough credit for what she did the first time around, and so is determined to win the rematch even more emphatically.
“I think a lot of people are saying the pressure is on me but it’s not. I think Katie has got all of the pressure, because we’re going back to Dublin, she’s running it back a second time, so the pressure is on her side again so I think maybe, I wouldn’t want to be in her position.”
“The excuses are firing me up, and it’s got me thinking ‘do you know what, I’m going to make sure and do a better job this time.’ I’m going to be coming forward, I’m going to be picking my shots so they are cleaner and harder, I’m going to be dominant and I’m going to be brutal.
“What’s the excuse going to be that time? I am going to hurt Katie Taylor.”
