Taylor’s speed key in 60KG victory

The greatest amateur boxer this country has ever seen has won her fifth world title in a row this morning in South Korea.

The Bray woman led from start to end in a tight and fierce battle at times in Jeju against Azerbaijan’s Yana Allekseevna in the 60Kg category.

Taylor won the opening round 10-9 according to two of the judges with the other judge going the same score in favour of Allekseevna.

The Irishwoman came out in the second with much more intent and with a right hook began to dominate her opponent leading by 20-19,20-19,19-19 on the scorecards at the half-way point.

The Azerbaijani looked visibly out of breath at each bell and Taylor was relentless, hounding her opponent around the ring to lead by 30-27,29-28,29-28 at the end of the third.

The Olympic champion from 2012 kept it tight and controlled in the last and with Allekseevna trying her best, Taylor landed some blows to write another chapter in her incredible career.

The final scorecard read 40-36,39-37,39-37 on a memorable morning for Irish boxing
