Eddie Hearn calls on Irish government to ‘support what is real’ over Taylor’s Croke Park dream

Eddie Hearn has called on Croke Park to ‘work together’ with Matchroom and the boxing authorities to give Katie Taylor her dream Croke Park bout.

Taylor defeated Chantelle Cameron in the 3Arena on Saturday night to become the undisputed champion across two weight divisions.

Victorious on the back of a majority decision, scored by the three judges at 95-95, 98-92 and 96-94, the Bray boxer gained revenge on Cameron to take possession of the WBC, the WBA, the IBF and WBO light-welterweight belts.

Having lost to Cameron back in May, Taylor’s victory inevitably led to immediate calls for a trilogy, with the 37-year-old having previously stated her desire to fight in the national stadium.

Speaking after the fight, boxing promoter Eddie Hearn explained the logistics behind a potential fight on Jones’ Road.

Hearn, the chairman of team Matchroom, called on Croke Park to align their rates with those of Wembley or Millennium Stadium. It is believed that security costs are the main reason for stand-off that currently exists.

“All we are asking for is for the cost to be in line with the biggest stadia in the world where we hold boxing,” said Hearn.

“We don’t want a free stadium. If they want to give us one that would be marvellous.

“All we are saying could be just make it there or there abouts at Wembley, or Millennium Stadium or Dallas Cowboys (rates). Should we just all try and work together.”

“What a moment that would be.”

Hearn went onto state that, at this stage, Taylor is up there with the highest profile fighters in the world such as Anthony Joshua, Fury and Canelo.

“We are starting to get to the levels that these great fighters deserve.

“We can do that in Ireland. There are not many places we can do that.

“This is Katie’s third seven-figure gate, Madison Square Garden and now twice at the 3 Arena.

“And as I said at the shopping centre on Wednesday, you can count on one hand the draws in boxing the size of Katie Taylor.

“There’s Canelo, it’s AJ, it’s Fury and it’s Katie Taylor and that is it really, globally.

“So, to reach those heights of what they deserve, we need to be in Ireland,” he added.

Hearn says that his team will do everything they can to ensure the fight takes place in Croke Park.

“Katie Taylor draws huge gates, especially in Ireland and that is the reality of the situation. My first thoughts are if we are going into Croke Park, we will do, everything we can to (get).

“Chantelle Cameron is the pick for the trilogy. And it is really only Chantelle or Amanda Serrano, they are the only two mega-fights out there that Croke Park warrants.”

Hearn went onto call on the Irish government

“I will not stop banging on the doors of government here until they recognise the importance of this woman in this country. Stop supporting things that aren’t real.

“Support what is real. She’s everything you want your children to stand for. Get behind her. Give her what she deserves. Croke Park next year, we’re coming,” he said.
